*Detective David Dresden was involved in a failed drug bust in which he was shot by his own partner, Colin Lowry, in addition to several other injuries from those being targeted by the bust. It was later proven in a court of law that Lowry was working for the targets of the taskforce and set up Dresden to be murdered. Lowry was convicted of three counts of murder in connection with his work along with the attempted murder of Detective David Dresden. Lowry was executed by the State of Illinois following a jury verdict of guilty on all charges.

Detective David Dresden is handicapped with limited to no left-side peripheral vision which makes him unsuitable for field work unless working with a partner. He also suffers from some emotional and mental impairment as a result of brain damage** to the frontal lobe. Neither of these conditions limit his abilities as a competent officer.

**Detective David Dresden is missing a portion of his frontal lobe as a result of surgery to remove a bullet in his brain that he received during the failed drug bust. The frontal lobes have been found to play a part in impulse control, judgment, language production, working memory, motor function, problem solving, sexual behavior, socialization, and spontaneity. The frontal lobes assist in planning, coordinating, controlling, and executing behavior. People who have damaged frontal lobes may experience problems with these aspects of cognitive function, being at times impulsive; impaired in their ability to plan and execute complex sequences of actions; perhaps persisting with one course of action or pattern of behavior when a change would be appropriate. Detective David Dresden has been hospitalized*** for several of these conditions. All of this should be kept in mind when he is being placed with a partner or in a unit.

***Detective David Dresden was treated in a psychiatric hospital during the latter part of 1994 and for most of 1995. Treatment included behavior modification and counseling for suicide attempts. In late 1995 he finished treatment and was declared legally sane and returned to work.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Overall, Detective Dresden seems to have been at one time a very ambitious officer- driven to be the best. In more recent years he has become disinterested in promotion. He is a highly intelligent and highly skilled officer, none the less, and should be utilized in work where he can work on his own and allows close monitoring of his work.
